In about 2 billion years, the Andromeda Galaxy is supposed to collide with our own.
Sorry for the huge-ass image, but I don't think its worth it small. If you don't like it, don't full-view (but you'll regret it). If you know anything about my Luhkazti characters...they live way in the future, when all human life has left the planet. I would imagine the sky would look something like this about then. And I just love doing starscapes :-D! I've been on an entirely too-long art block, so I took a day off of commissions and work for the organizations I'm involved with, and pulled something unfinished out of my sketch folder. I feel much better now. Luhkazti (c) Myenia Daily DeviationGiven 2009-05-14Inevitable by ~Myenia "Its absolutely brilliant! I adore the star scape its transfixing ..and almost daunting- to know the inevitable ... I can't stop searching this work for every detail. The lighting on the characters is wonderfully done." But you are completely correct. Andromeda and the Milky Way are headed straight for each other. As it stands right now you can actually see the Andromeda galaxy with your naked eye. The catch is it has to be during the right season, in the right hemisphere, and a place with little to no light pollution.
Another fun fact, with the exception of Andromeda, every single point of light you see in the night sky is a star in the Milk Way galaxy. In other words you can't actually see a single light source out side of our own galaxy without the use of binoculars or telescopes
Sorry if thats info overload but that's what working at a planetarium does to ya
Anyway, stunning piece and glad to see some stuff posted by you again ^^. I'm still enjoying the calendar you put together
